In this blog, I have attempted to identify the wrong box in relationships that possibly people follow as they get older
in an organization.
- While the new employees are very determined to achieve their goals and targets as they join the organization with a clear mindset that there are certain task, assignments or targets that they need to accomplish for which they are hired , while the older employees focus majorly on relationship building taking their work for granted . This should be a nay , because it is the work and the accomplishment of organizational goals that should be a priority at any point of time and relationships build over it .
- Some leaders/senior employees are of the opinion that any organization requires their knowledge, craft, skills from them and don’t give any importance to relationship building at all. Being older in the organization, they don’t make any effort to connect with the other employees especially the ones from other department. This is also a nay, because it is through one’s connections outside their team and department that actually help one to grow and explore as they connect with people having different skill sets, job responsibilities etc.
- Some older/senior employees value, respect, and considers worth connecting to only their peers or superiors. While people from their team or their direct reportees don’t have any relationship with them. They don’t know their team members , if he/she is a parent or not? No personal details are shared with each other. This should be a nay too, because, ones relationships with their subordinates and team members is very important in getting the best out of them.
- Some senior employees/managers are so much obsessed with their own skills and crafts that they always crave for being the smartest in the room . This trait mostly causes a disconnect and is an obstacle in relationship building with team or subordinates.
I think whatever one strategies to be, however keeping to
your self is not a solution to avoid the negative impacts of work relationships
, rather it will limit the opportunities to grow and make an impact.
